What is a Notary?A notary public for the State of Tennessee is a public official appointed by the state to certify the authenticity of signatures and copies of documents, to administer oaths and affirmations, and to perform other such acts as are allowed or required by law. A notary for the State of Tennessee serves as an impartial witness. A notary public for the State of Tennessee has the power to administer oaths, to take depositions and to take affidavits. T.C.A. § 8-16-302. A notary public who has been duly elected and has been issued a certificate by the Secretary of State may exercise the functions of a notary public in all counties of Tennessee.
