Not only can you mail your income tax return to the IRS using the U.S. Postal Service, but you may also use certain private delivery companies. Not all delivery companies are authorized by the IRS for tax return delivery, however.

The IRS considers a return to have been filed on time if it is postmarked on or before the day the return is due.

Since private delivery services don't use postmarks, the IRS has certain rules to determine just what date is treated as a postmark date when returns are delivered by services other than U.S. mail. Each delivery service that applies to be a "designated private delivery service" must qualify under the established rules.

As of September 5, 2002, the following delivery services qualify for filing your returns and tax payments:

 

Federal Express (FedEx): FedEx Priority Overnight, FedEx Standard Overnight, FedEx 2 Day, FedEx International Priority.  

 

United Parcel Service (UPS): UPS Next Day Air, UPS Next Day Air Saver, UPS 2nd Day Air, UPS Day Air A.M., and UPS Worldwide Express.

 

Below are the street addresses to all submission processing centers. Taxpayers sending tax returns by express or certified mail from outside the country should mail to the Austin address*.
